Transmission Fluid Change in Castro Valley

Transmission fluid change is something we don’t think about every day, but it is very important to the longevity of your vehicle. Transmissions have plenty of moving parts, and they need to be properly lubricated and cooled – this is the job of the transmission fluid. Over time this fluid deteriorates and loses its protective characteristics – hence the need for transmission fluid change, also known as a transmission fluid flush (some shorten it to just “transmission flush”).

There is another reason to perform transmission fluid change – over time transmission fluid picks up bits and pieces of metal shavings that naturally occur inside the transmission, picks up moisture, and non-metallic friction material. These are carried by the transmission fluid and can accelerate transmission wear, instead of protecting it from such. Replacing transmission fluid removes all these debris. That’s why regular transmission fluid change can extend transmission life, while saving you a multi-thousand dollar repair.

How do I know it’s time to change transmission fluid?

Your owner’s manual should spell it out. Recommended transmission fluid change intervals differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, depend on the vehicle, and the type of driving you do (stop-and-go traffic is hard on transmissions).

Having said that, the rule of thumb is that vehicles with manual transmissions should have transmission fluid change performed every 50,000 miles or so, while vehicles with automatic transmission should have transmission fluid changed every 30,000 to 40,000 miles. Fortunately, your mechanical repair shop can test the transmission fluid and based on the test results, can recommend fluid change. At Adams Autoworx in Castro Valley we can perform transmission fluid testing and let you know the outcome.

What if my car has permanently sealed transmission?

Many newer cars have what is known as “permanently sealed transmission”. Manufacturers claim that the transmission fluid is good for the “life of the transmission”. What they do not mention is that we can extend the lifespan of the transmission by performing transmission fluid change. And yes, professionals can perform transmission fluid change on the “permanently sealed” transmissions.

Transmission fluid change at Adams Autoworx uses brand new transmission fluid specially designated for your vehicle, thus restores correct physical and chemical properties of the fluid inside your transmission. Such work is performed by our nationally ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) certified technicians, and we use Original Equipment quality fluids. Our technicians can test the transmission fluid in your vehicle, and change it if necessary, and it can be completed the same day – you drop off the vehicle in the morning, and pick it up in the afternoon.
