At Adams Autoworx we highly recommend tire tread depth check before the big winter rains.Worn out tires can cause loss of control during winter. Driving on dry raods in the summer is much more forgiving than on wet, winter roads. That why we recommend tire check before the winter storms.
Worn out tires can be a safety issues - when the tread depth falls below 2/32 mm, loss of vehicle control on wet roads becomes a real possibility. That's why we recommend tread depth check before the winter season.
At Adams Autoworx we recommend that you bring your vehicle to our Castro Valley auto care facility – we will be happy to check the tires for you. If time does not permit a visit, we recommend the “Penny Test”. This test measures the depth of the tread – but it does not test for uneven tire wear or age-related tire deterioration.
How To Check Tire Tread Depth?
- Insert a penny into the tread groove so that Lincoln’s head is pointing down. If you can see Lincoln’s head fully exposed, the tread has worn down to 2/32” or less, and State of California says you need new tires. Check different areas of the tire, especially those that look worn.
- Another way to check tread depth is through tread wear indicator bars – they can be found on many modern tires. They are small, raised bars located in the groves between treads. They are 2/32” deep, so if the tread is even with the bars, it’s time to get new tires.
